The demands of the colleges had ranged from Rs 40,000 to Rs 75,000 for convener quota and Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh in management quota.

After Sania, Sachin `issued' ration card!

NELLORE: If Sania Mirza can be `issued' a ration card, why can't the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar get one too! In what is a classic case of
rank official apathy, two ration cards bearing Sachin Tendulkar's name and photographs were found during the exercise to weed out bogus ration cards here on Wednesday.

Both the cards were issued in Nellore town, with details such as father's name, family members, missing. The two cards were part of the 6,000 ration cards which were found to be bogus. Ironically, some cards were `issued' in the name of buildings and some to streets.

In all, two lakh ration cards were verified by officials after the district administration went into an overdrive to weed out fake cards.

Drop-boxes and a toll-free helpline have been set up to receive as many complaints as possible from the public on bogus cards. Officials said ten days' time has been given to the people to disclose the details voluntarily. "After that, we will conduct random raids, seize the bogus cards and book cases against the card holders," a senior official warned. According to official sources, there are 6,94,985 white ration cards in the district and amongst them, nearly one lakh cards are suspected to be bogus.

Homosexuality no crime

NEW DELHI:

In a historic judgement, the Delhi High Court
on Thursday decriminalized homosexuality by reading down section 377 of the Indian
HC decriminalises homosexuality
Gay activists celebrate after the Delhi High Court decriminalised homosexuality by striking down section 377 of the IPC, outside the court in New Delhi.

The Section 377 of the IPC as far as it criminalizes gay sex among consenting adults is violation of fundamental rights, said the high court. However, Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalizes homosexuality, will continue for non-consensual and non-vaginal sex.

Love-bites don't lie, Deepika !

The actress who has returned to badminton and yoga with a vengeance, has lost five kilos. And, as she stands before you in a short green dress, she looks dishy. “Dishy is such a sexy word,’’ she smiles, her brown eyes lighting up like beacons on a cloudy monsoon day.

The actress has just wrapped up a rom-com with Saif Ali Khan, 39, and is actually packing her suitcases again for a 50-day schedule of Sajid Nadiadwala’s Houseful in London. “This will be my first full-on comedy film,’’ she says. “And I’m a bit excited and nervous.’’

Her co-star is Akshay Kumar, 42, and when you ask Deepika why she chooses men almost double her age to team up with, the 23-year-old says, “I don’t sign a film looking at the hero’s age.’’ She adds, “The script of a film has to turn me on. There are films that I have rejected that other actresses have accepted and vice versa.’’

Factors like money, too, don’t count for this gorgeous girl who is in a happy place in her career, simply because she’s not avaricious. Deepika who saw Kuch Kuch Hota Hai when she was in Class 6, still says bagging Om Shanti Om with Shah Rukh Khan, 44, remains one of the best moments in her life.

And, though there are legions of fans who wish to see her team up with her real-life sweetheart Ranbir Kapoor, the actress says there is no project on the anvil with the two of them.

Currently, if there is one dark cloud that she is worried about, it’s the fact that she will have to spend 50 days away from Mumbai. “I get homesick when I’m away for long spells,’’ says the leggy lass. We’re guessing she misses two staple things in her life when she’s away — Ranbir and her favourite South Indian dish, rasam. Ummm...

Petrol price hiked by Rs 4, diesel by Rs 2

Government has hiked the petrol prices by Rs 4 per litre and diesel by Rs 2 per litre to cut losses of oil companies in view of rising international crude.

Petroleum Minister Murli Deora discussed the necessity of raising fuel prices with party leaders and he is also reported to have sounded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [ Images ] on the issue, sources close to the development said.

Public sector oil companies have seen losses on fuel sale widening to about Rs 170 crore (Rs 1.7 billion) per day on firming global oil prices and may end the fiscal with over Rs 49,000 crore (Rs 490 billion) in revenue loss.

Indian Oil , Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum have seen losses on sale of petrol, diesel, domestic LPG and kerosene inflating from Rs 130 crore (Rs 1.3 billion) to about Rs 170 crore (Rs 1.7 billion) per day, an industry official said.

The hike would come into effect from midnight.

The ministry, however, clarified that there was no change in the prices of kerosene and LPG.

Congress MP slaps bank manager

HYDERABAD:

Congress MP from Nagarkurnool in Andhra Pradesh M Jagannath on Tuesday found himself in a spot after he allegedly slapped a bank
manager in Mahabubnagar district, following which the bank union threatened to step up its protests.

Jagannath allegedly slapped Ravinder Reddy, manager of a local branch of Andhra Pradesh Grameen Vikas Bank, for not releasing the loan amount to SC/ST beneficiaries for the last six months at Uppununtala in the district, official sources said.

The MP alleged that the manager gave an improper reply when he called him up during a meeting of the mandal officials and public representatives to find out the reasons for not distributing the loans to the SC/ST beneficiaries.

Dissatisfied over the manager's reply, Jagannath headed to the bank from the mandal committee meeting and in the argument that followed, Jagannath allegedly slapped Reddy.

IcfaiTech leaves 1,200 students in the lurch

HYDERABAD: It is finally curtains for IcfaiTech, Hyderabad. The authorities on Monday served notices on the remaining B.Tech students to pack up

and leave. This has come as a final blow to the 1,200 students who had earlier filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking recognition of their degree on humanitarian grounds after the UGC had termed the degree issued by the Hyderabad campus as illegal.

Icfai has a university
in Dehradun and another in Agartala, Tripura. According to sources, the degrees awarded by the campuses at Dehradun and Agartala are recognised by the UGC. “After discovering that Icfai was enrolling students at the Hyderabad campus and then awarding them degrees from either Dehradun or Agartala, the UGC described this practice as illegal,” said sources.

Maytas may get more time

Hyderabad
June 30: The state government has decided to give some more time to the beleaguered Maytas Infra to achieve financial closure for the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. On the last day to achieve financial closure, Maytas Infra management submitted a letter to the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, telling him that it was talking to several financial institutions to finalise the closure and needs more time.
Though the Chief Minister has not formally responded, it is learnt that government has decided to give some more time to the company, a twin of the scam-tainted Satyam.

Gilly reveals DC’s success mantra

JOHANNESBURG
May 25: Whoever writes the scripts for Adam Gilchrist? The final on Sunday was personally not the best for the Deccan Chargers but the enviable leader that he is, the Australian put the failure with the bat quickly aside when he took the field. The heat and passion of the body language of the Chargers could be felt a good hundred yards away.
If Gilchrist was the tactical captain for the night, Andrew Symonds was the adrenaline leader. Throwing himself around like a kid in a water park, the positive energy from Symonds literally rubbed off on each of his mates. The Chargers did not just defend 143, their effort on the field was an assertion of intent. They deserved to win.
Afterwards, Gilchrist said he was surprised to see a match winner like Symonds being left out of the Ashes squad. “I was surprised. But it is not my job to pick the team for Australia. Symonds is that sort of a player — he has been such a team man and he gets the great spirit in the team.
“We saw a little glimpse of that in the last season of the IPL where he got just four games and what he added there. The respect he got from the international and Indian players and is huge. He became an instant favourite when he joined the squad this time. He is a great personality and a wonderful talent on the cricket field. He can turn matches,” said Gilchrist.
For a player who has taken to the big stage with fondness, the IPL final was a rare one. No shame here as he was outfoxed by another legend who did not have his team-mates backing his extraordinary commitment in crunch games. Gilchrist paid a rich tribute to Anil Kumble and also noted that it was difficult for him to pick between Australia’s World Cup wins and the victory on Sunday.
“It is no surprise that a guy like Anil Kumble comes up with a standout performance in this tournament. His leadership from the outside, both in this competition and when he was leading the national team, he looks to me like a natural leader... a guy who defends everyone, makes them feel comfortable and part of the set up. So no surprise that the team did well under his guidance,” he said.

Praja Rajyam opts for rising sun sign

Hyderabad

June 30: The Praja Rajyam has requested the Election Commission to allocate the rising sun as the new symbol for the party. Majority of the party leaders agreed to the new symbol as the party did not want to contest the forthcoming elections, including the GHMC polls, with the “unlucky” rail engine symbol.

The Praja Rajyam said the party would consider the “umbrella” symbol if the rising sun is not allotted on technical grounds. The rising sun symbol is already allotted to the DMK, in Tamil Nadu. The DMK had reportedly objected to the proposal when Mr Chiranjeevi launched his party in Tirupati and used the rising sun as its symbol.

The PR is hopeful of getting the symbol since the PR and the DMK contest in different states. According to party sources, the Election Commission has the power to allocate the same symbol if the regional parties function in different states. For example, the Cycle is a symbol for both the Telugu Desam in Andhra Pradesh and the Samajwadi party in Uttar Pradesh.

“We want to contest the elections with a new symbol. I hope the Election Commission will consider our request for the rising sun since the PR was recognised as a regional party polling 19 per cent of the votes in the general elections,” Mr Chiranjeevi said. The PR has decided to launch an agitation against co-operative farming and construction of Babli project in Maharashtra. The party has asked the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to intervene in the issue to protect the interests of Andhra Pradesh.

“The state government has failed to handle the issue properly. That is why Maharashtra has violated rules and constructed several projects,” Mr Chiranjeevi said.

The party extended moral support to the agitation of the Telugu Desam MLA, Mr Rama Rao, who is seeking withdrawal of CID inquiry on alleged charges of rape and murder of a college student.

West Indies beat India by 8 wickets, level series 1-1

w65viqt8sh
Mahendra Singh Dhoni's defiant 95 went in vain as India suffered a humiliating eight-wicket defeat at the hands of an inspired West Indies in the lopsided second cricket one-day international in Kingston on Sunday.
After dismissing the visitors for a modest 188 in 48.2 overs, the Caribbean team rode on openers Chris Gayle (64) and Runako Morton (85) to overhaul the target in 34.1 overs and level the four match series 1-1.
Earlier, electing to bat first, Dhoni waged a lonely battle as India succumbed to a batting collapse against a ferocious pace attack lead by West Indies pacer Ravi Rampaul.
Rampaul produced a career best four-wicket haul and combined with Jerome Taylor (3/35) to rip through the top-order before joining hands with Dwayne Bravo (3/26) to polish the lower order.
Chasing 189 to win, West Indies got off to a rollicking start with Gayle taking the Indian attack by the scruff of its neck and Morton playing initially the second fiddle.

Yuvraj scores ton as India beat West Indies

Yuvraj Singh  hit a rollicking 131-run knock as India pipped the West Indies by 20 runs in a thrilling first one-day international to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series in Kingston  on Friday.
Leaving behind their pathetic showing in the Twenty20   World Cup, Indian batsmen fired on all cylinders as they trampled the West Indies attack to reach an intimidating 339 for six after opting to bat at Sabina Park.
However, defending even such a massive total proved quite a task for the Indians as they just about managed to bowl the hosts out for 319 in 48.1 overs.

Prabhu Deva Secretly Marries Nayanthara in hyderabad

news doing the rounds is that the choreographer, actor-turned-director Prabhu Deva has secretly married Nayanthara in Hyderabad.

Prabhu Deva, the father of three kids and husband of the former dancer Ramlath, fell in love with Nayantara when they worked together in Vijay’s ‘Villu’.

However, the sources close to the actress denied the rumor, and said, “She was not even in Hyderabad when rumours of her marriage broke.”

A few months back when Prabhu lost his eldest son, it was Nayanthara, who gave him strength to come out of his personal pain.

Last heard, Prabhudeva had answered a question on his so-called relationship with Nayantara that ‘it’s personal’ and no one had any say in it.

The reports also said that both Prabhu and Nayantara have been living together for the last 3 weeks and the marriage was held in Hyderabad in secret.

Prabhu Deva has flown to an unnamed place saying that he has to finish some works in a Hindi project.

Previously, the hearsays linking Prabhudeva and Nayantara grew stronger, as Nayantara had the name 'Prabhudeva' tattooed on her wrist.

Will Nayan or Prabhu Deva explain as to what is going on?

City students bag top ranks in EAMCET

All the toppers from Narayana and Sri Chaitanya institutions.
Narayana students bag 9 of the top 10 ranks in engineering
Chaitanya students get 9 of the top 10 ranks in medical

HYDERABAD: City students bagged the maximum ranks in the EAMCET this year with all the top ranks being garnered by students of Narayana and Sri Chaitanya institutions.
In the top 10 ranks in medical stream eight were bagged by students from the city while in the engineering stream six out of the top 10 were from the twin cities. Interestingly, all these students belong to the two corporate institutions.

In the engineering stream nine out of the 10 ranks were secured by Narayana students while Sri Chaitanya repeated the same feat in the medical stream.
Inter toppers too

Interestingly, majority of these students had already topped in the Intermediate examination, results of which were released a few days ago.

In a statement, P. Narayana of Narayana institutions said that 55 of their students figured in the top 100 in engineering and 18 out of 100 in the medical stream.

Dr. B.S. Rao, Director of Sri Chaitanya group said that among the top 100 in medical stream 88 students belong to their colleges. He said 116 students figured in the top 100 ranks of both medical and engineering streams.

Despite the introduction of Intermediate weightage, which was apparently aimed cutting down the coaching advantage of urban students, city students took majority of top ranks.

The best & worst of IPL 2

So, IPL 2 has finally drawn to an end. Cricket junkies needn't despair; they'll soon get their next fix from the T20 World Cup. Meanwhile, here's a (mostly) tongue-in-cheek look at the highs and lows of this year's tournament.

Finds of the tournament: Manish Pandey and Shadab Jakati. A lot more will surely be heard of these two young men. And Dirk Nannes, while no spring chicken, had a dream IPL debut right up till the semi-final, where it all went horribly wrong for him and Delhi Daredevils.

Most overhyped IPL debuts: Kamran Khan was supposed to be Shane Warne's secret weapon but himself ended up as the biggest victim of his suspect action. Flintoff and Pietersen hardly justified their fees. In fact, Pietersen's return to England after five matches, which put Kumble in the driver's seat, was probably the best thing that happened to Royal Challengers. Finally, Mashrafe Mortaza spent almost the entire tournament on the bench and when he did play, promptly handed Rohit Sharma a gift-wrapped 26-run over.

Evergreen legends: Hayden, Gilchrist, Kumble and Warne all proved that retirement doesn't hurt the skills of true champs. If anything, it may actually help. By the way, I was furiously criticised for picking Kumble in both my over-35 XI and IPL dream XI. No surprise there, even great batsmen have underestimated him over the years -- and paid for it. But after his amazing spell in the final, I hope I'll be forgiven for crowing a bit.

Incidentally, in a previous piece, I'd asked 'Do retired players make best IPL captains'? As it turned out, both the finalists were led by men who have retired from international cricket (Kumble and Gilchrist). Excuse me while I go caw-caw.

Sad sights: Not every great shone. Sourav Ganguly played a couple of sizzling knocks but was otherwise largely disappointing. Sachin Tendulkar confirmed, yet again, that captaincy is not his cup of tea, in any format. VVS Laxman and Chaminda Vaas were quickly benched after some disastrous performances. But at least they all got a chance to play. Poor Glenn McGrath never got to bowl even one ball in anger.

Innings of the tournament: Many contenders, including the two centuries by de Villiers and Pandey, and Ross Taylor's 33-ball 81 against Knight Riders. For sheer impact and breathtaking brutality, though, it's hard to beat Gilchrist's 35-ball 85 which left the Daredevils dazed.

Best over by a bowler: Again, lots of contenders in a tournament which saw bowlers playing a big role and three hat-tricks. My vote would go to Irfan Pathan denying Rohit Sharma and Deccan Chargers right at the end, and Munaf Patel keeping his head even as Mumbai's batsmen lost theirs in a dramatic final over. Of course, this being cricket, Munaf was smashed for 25 runs in one over by Delhi Daredevils shortly thereafter.

Talk of irony: IPL 1's No. 8 won IPL 2, and No. 7 finished second. Also, the highest score of IPL 2 was 211-4, by Rajasthan Royals. The lowest score? 58, also by Rajasthan Royals!

Most thrilling match: Many matches went right down to the last ball, but only one went beyond: the Super Over which was won by Rajasthan Royals. No one who saw that match will forget it in a hurry.

Sweet revenge: The next time Rajasthan Royals and Knight Riders played, the Knights beat the defending champs to knock them out of the tournament. Also, Royal Challengers were thrashed by 92 runs by Chennai Super Kings in their first league encounter, but responded by beating them twice, including in the semi-final. And Deccan Chargers lost to Royal Challengers in a largely tension-free final league match, but beat them in the game that really counted.

Funniest moment: One frisky dog successfully foiled the best efforts of ground staffers to lure him off the field, even as several strapping cricketers maintained a discreet distance.

Saddest moment: Brendon McCullum's despair as he played a blistering knock, then took a brilliant catch, and still ended up on the losing side as Ross Taylor played a blinder for Royal Challengers.

IPL owner we most want to hug: Preity Zinta. The finance ministry should consider imposing a fringe benefits tax on all the Kings XI players at the receiving end of Ms Zinta's jhappies.

IPL owner we most want to scold: Shah Rukh, Shah Rukh. Good boys don't take potshots at living legends, especially when those legends go on to be proved right. If someone criticises your movies, will you now say that they should go make their own? In which case, who will watch yours?

And finally, a chain SMS that's doing the rounds that I can't resist putting up: Next year's IPL will be in Pakistan. The cheerleaders will wear burkhas, the security will be provided by the Taliban and al-Qaida and there will be a bomb blast after every sixer and wicket!

Cheers and see you soon at the T20 World Cup!

When Katrina Meets Her Kid Fans

Kartina Kaif

The hot and beautiful actress, Kartina Kaif not only has the younger fans, but of all ages. She recently spent some time with her kid fans from the slums of Dharavi, Mumbai.

Once source revealed, “Most of the kids were ragpickers and they enjoyed meeting her. The kids also showed her the paintings they had made and Katrina couldn’t stop raving about their talent. She spoke to the kids at length and encouraged them to follow their dreams.”

Looking like Katrina is following footsteps of dear friend Salman Khan, as he is also involved in many charity works.

Salman Carries His Luck In Hand

Salman Khan

Well it’s not because of his strong arms and macho personality, but the actor is obsessed of his blue sapphire bracelet. Salman is not so superstitious but when it comes to his bracelet the actor can’t do without it. Salman loves his bracelet so much that now he decides to make it hero in his upcoming film Wanted Dead Or Alive’s poster.

One friend of Salman said, “Everyone who knows Salman bhai knows of his belief in the bracelet. He tries to wear it in all his films.”

Well, we will soon see how much luck this bracelet carries to Salman with this film.

Bipasha In Trouble With Her First Bengali Film

Bipasha Basu’s first Bengali film Shob Charitro Kalponik is almost ready to hit the theaters. But there is some conflict between Bipasha and the producers of the film. The producers of the film are not allowing the actor to lend her voice for her own lines. Someone else will dub her lines for the film.

After a much discussion the producers allows her to dub for only one print of the film that is going to be submitted to the National Awards. However, Bips is not ready to accept this. Bipasha is playing a role of most ambitious and challenging role ever in the film and don’t want someone else to dub for it.

Bipasha says, “No way will I allow this to happen to my first Bengali film. In fact one of the reasons why I waited so long to do a Bengali film was because I wanted to be sure I could carry off the lines.”

“But I’m very clear on this issue. I’ll not let the film be released with someone else’s voice. I know what that does to a performance. And I won’t dub only for the National Award print. I won’t dub for only one print. I want every print to have my voice,” adds Bipasha.

Recently a leading newspapers printed article named Hrithik-Susanne split?” suggesting that the couple is set to apart. After reading the article Hrithik refused it and said that he is still together with wife Susanne as well as will soon go for a picnic with her and their kids.

“It is too funny! Yes, Suzanne shifted to her parents’ place with the kids two days ago and I was to join her on my return as there is a white ant treatment going on in my house and a section of my floor is being renovated. I’m with Suzanne right now having a picnic with my wife, kids and in-laws,” said Hrithik.

Also the spokesperson of Hrithik said, “It’s a circus… Just a sensational story and nothing else.”

Good bye to Corruption. Welcome to change. Chiruz-Talkz

Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi launched his party 'Praja Rajyam' before a mammoth crowd of his fans and supporters pledging to work for social justice as its main agenda and to root out corruption.

Chiranjeevi, who hails from the backward 'Kapu' community, said his party would also work for "additional reservations" for the economically backward among the forward castes.
Invoking Kalam's pet concept of PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas), he said Praja Rajyam would strive for realising the dream of "Gram Swaraj." Referring to the controversy over Special Economic Zones, he said his party would oppose acquisition of farm lands for SEZs.
